Oh! Edo Rocket comes to mind. While it might seem an unlikely title, it does have a similar theme of a foreigner, in this case an alien, winding up in Japan during the Edo period.

Unfortunately, I've not seen that one. I tried to keep the list mostly to anime I've seen, or at least know something about. My initial longlist had about 40 shows on it, I think the final list of 20 shows gives folks plenty to be getting on with! By all means, please share the good points of Angolmois here in the comments though! |

Not sure if the editors care, but the statement that Sword of the Stranger is Bones first anime film is factually incorrect. Bones first film was Escaflowne in 2000.

Wasn't Escaflowne a Sunrise film? Maybe Bones helped with production, but it wasn't their film, as I understand it... |

I always wonder why no anime studio has ever tried tackling Vagabond. They have 37 volumes to touch so they can at least go until the ending of Kojiro's arc or the Yoshioka. No need to adapt all at once like Hakyu Hoshin Engi. I mean, we had 3 adaptations of Berserk in the past decades.

Some good picks. It is a huge shame that Katanagatari is not available to stream or own. Maybe one day Discotek will release it on Blu-Ray.
Even if it is not their first film, there is still Knocking on Heaven's Door and Conqueror of Shamballa. If abridged versions count, there is also Raxephon: Pluralitas Concentio.I suppose you could say that it was their first original film. |

That's a good point. Also it does appear that Studio Bones was formed by ex-Sunrise staff, and that the Escaflowne movie, while accredited to Sunrise, was, as you say, the new Studio Bones' first film. I stand corrected! |

Its well made but as a standalone work its really disappointing, ending in a total nothing spot. I guess they wanted more cours and did not get. |

Dororo (2019) also streams on HIDIVE, notably with an English dub and better subtitles than Amazon. Same with Blade of the Immortal (2019). And Vinland Saga (season 1). Only in the US, though, I think.

My favorite Sengoku period story is not an anime but a little drama called Nobunaga no Chef, after the manga of the same name. It strays a bit from the manga but they are both enjoyable in their own ways.
